The Planter's Room

The original bedroom of the 1954 bungalow, at the front where the shutters open straight onto the coffee. The bed and the almirah are the ones my grandfather bought; the mattress is not. Mornings here start with the pulper running, which is either the best or the worst thing about the room depending on the month. Ask for this one in December, when the yard below is full.

Pepper Room

Ground floor, opening onto the verandah where most of the day actually happens. Thick walls and a north aspect keep it cool right through April, which is the month people underestimate here. The pepper vines are on the shade trees directly outside. Easiest room for anyone who would rather not manage the stairs.

The Long Room

Above the kitchen, which is why it is the warm room on a wet night and the one families take. One double and two singles, with space left over. The window at the far end looks down the valley towards Madikeri, and on a clear evening you can see the lights come on. In the monsoon we let this room to one group with the rest of the house.
